
Come hear stories about American and Arizona History and the Mesa Contemporary Arts center. Presented by the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute, Professors Harriet Cole and Marilyn Torres reveal stories of our history that you won’t want to miss.
Harriet
Cole has been a student, a musician, and a journalist. She has fixed
traffic signals, raised children, and written a novel. Her storytelling
career began as she earned her Academic Certificate in Storytelling at South
Mountain Community College. Currently she is a member of the adjunct faculty
at both South Mountain and at Mesa Community Colleges. As a storyteller, she
specializes in Norse Sagas as well as telling the stories of her childhood
in Northern New Mexico.
Marilyn
Torres is the WestWinds Storyteller in the Phoenix valley.
She is an African-Latina oral traditional storyteller of over 30 years.
Marilyn received chieftaincies in 1984 in the village of Imota West Africa,
Nigeria as a descendent of the "children of slavery from the island of
Puerto Rico." Marilyn is a multilingual storyteller and the newest
residential faculty member for South Mountain Community College -
Storytelling Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.
Marilyn is a motivational storyteller/speaker in the United Stated and abroad introducing the importance of oral traditions in the field of: anthropology, psychology, humanities and language acquisition in education. Marilyn was a Spanish Foreign Language/Social Studies teacher in Secondary Education in the State of Arizona before coming to Maricopa Community Colleges. She is dedicated to incorporating storytelling into all forms of academic achievement, literacy and college bound leadership among youth.
Marilyn is currently working with a co-author on a historic novel, In the Spirit of Sacagawea: The Raven and the Rose featuring the Lewis and Clark Discovery Expedition (1803-1808) forthcoming in the Summer of 2012.
